1863: The FA hold their very first meeting to define football's basic laws and rules. Up until this meeting, Sheffield FC had been playing a version of the game that ignored fouls, offsides, and awarded a free kick to any player who managed to catch the ball.
1996: Southampton enforce their reputation as everyone's bogey side as they shock Manchester United 6-3 at the Dell, with, guess who, Matt Le Tissier scoring a beautiful chip over Peter Schmeichel.

1957: Future Spurs maestro and England manager, Glenn Hoddle, is born in Hayes, Middlesex.

2003: Arsenal draw 1-1 with Rotherham in the League Cup third round. It's an unremarkable game, but the Highbury crowd witness Arsenal's youngest ever player, debutant Cesc Fabregas, at the age of 16 years and 177 days. Gael Clichy also makes his first Arsenal appearance.

2004: Adrian Mutu is sacked by Chelsea after he fails a drugs test.
