Terry could still lead England out at World Cup

Rio Ferdinand is currently [1.25] to captain England in their World Cup opener against USA, with punters assuming that only injury will deny him following Fabio Capello's claim that his vice-captain would step-up after John Terry was stripped of the armband.

However, Patrick Barclay has an interesting theory in The Times this morning, stating that Capello's unwillingness to publically address the situation, and the fact he hasn't spoken to Ferdinand since Friday, suggests that it isn't yet set in stone that he will lead England in South Africa.

He is also suspicious of Terry's defiant comments on Saturday morning that he will "fight back" to try to regain the captaincy, questioning whether Capello had been as hard on him in their meeting as was initially implied.

Barclay reckons that the England boss is hoping that Terry will steer clear of controversy for a few months and that public opinion will swing enough for him to get away with reinstating the Chelsea defender.

Do you think there's any substance to the theory? If so, Terry can still be backed at [32.0] to be first out of the tunnel when the Three Lions face USA on June 12.
